🎭 Why This Festival?
It started in 1998 as a humble promotion for Boryeong's mineral-rich mud cosmetics. Nearly three decades later, it's grown into Korea's most internationally recognized summer festival. CNN and Lonely Planet have called it one of the best summer festivals in Asia.
Boryeong mud comes from tidal flats along Korea's west coast. It's packed with germanium, bentonite, and minerals proven to benefit skin health. The same mud used in Korean beauty products is the star of this festival — only here, you don't apply it gently. You dive into it.

🍽 Food Worth Trying
Daecheon Beach is a seafood paradise.
- Grilled Shellfish (jogae-gui): Razor clams, scallops, and abalone grilled over charcoal. The signature Daecheon experience. Try "Daecheon Gaja Jogae" or "Cheongchun Jogae."
- Flower Crab Stew (kkotge-tang): Fresh blue crab from the West Sea, boiled spicy or mild. "Daecheon Bonga" is a local favorite.
- Bone Broth Sujebi (sagol sujebi): Hand-torn noodle soup in rich ox bone broth. "Kimgane" has been making it for 50+ years.
- Puffer Fish Soup (bok-tang): Clear or spicy, a local hangover cure. "Seossine Keundaek" is known for it.
- Night Market: During the festival, beachside food stalls open with seafood pancakes, grilled squid, corn dogs, and more.
🗺 Nearby Places Worth Visiting
- Muchangpo Mysterious Sea Road (20 min south): The sea literally splits open. At low tide, a 1.5 km sand path appears between the shore and Seokdae Island. You can pick crabs and clams along the way. Check tide times before going.
- Seongju Temple Site (Seongjusaji): A Baekje-era temple ruin with a National Treasure stone stele and three Treasure-class stone pagodas. A peaceful spot with a small history museum.
- Boryeong Mud Theme Park: Year-round indoor mud facility connected to the festival grounds. Good option if you arrive on a rainy day.
- Sudeoksa Temple (40 min north): One of Korea's most important Zen Buddhist temples. The Daeungjeon main hall is a National Treasure of Baekje architecture.
- Oseosan Mountain: Boryeong's highest peak (791m). Known for silver grass fields in autumn and stunning West Sea sunsets.
ℹ️ Practical Tips
- What to wear: Clothes you don't mind getting destroyed. Mud T-shirts sold on site (~$7). Bring a full change of clothes.
- Valuables: Waterproof pouch is essential (sold on site). Seal your phone and wallet completely.
- Showers: Free shower facilities inside the experience zone. Bring your own soap and towel.
- Accommodation: Motels, pensions, and guesthouses near Daecheon Beach. Book at least 2 weeks early during festival season — they sell out.
- Weather: Late July to early August is hot and humid (30–35°C / 86–95°F). End of monsoon season, so rain is possible. Sunscreen is a must.
- Payment: Card accepted at the festival, but bring cash for night market stalls.
- Language: Some English signage at the festival. Basic Korean greetings go a long way.
👋 HelloKorea's Take
The Mud Festival is the most fun way to experience a Korean summer with your whole body. You'll fall, laugh, and wrestle strangers in mud — and by the end of the day, language barriers won't matter anymore. When the festival winds down, grab a plate of grilled shellfish on Daecheon Beach and watch the sunset over the West Sea. That's a Korean summer.
